Goodbye Toronto. Hello São Paulo.
A tropical New York. One of the biggest cities in Brazil. A true masterpiece of food, and culture.
I have 3 days to see, eat, and drink as much as I can. Which is great because alcohol here is very cheap.
My first night out. A few beers before we grab our uber. This goes perfectly with an order of pao de queijo. Which was almost as cheap as my beer. You'll notice that being a theme throughout my trip here. The inexpensive food and drinks. Thanks to my Canadian currency exchange.
If you are ever in sao Paulo I highly recommend Beco de Batman, or known as Batman Alley. A graffiti filled alley with artists, pubs, small restaurants, and cheerful people. It reminds me of Kensington Market in Toronto, mixed with a bit of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
My first bite of the night. A hotdog from Charles dog.
If hotdogs don't interest you. Then maybe a craft beer? This alley has tons of it. Or some delightful music to help you digest.
This place makes me feel at home. Though my home is 8000 kilometers away.
Finishing the night with some grilled cheeses.Probably a smart choice to soak up the beer. To lessen the hangover for tomorrow's festivities.
If you like fresh fruits, meats, and other treats. You'll find plenty on Austa street at a farmers market. But be prepared to eat a lot while walking through. Free samples are plenty. And the fruits are delicious. But I'm on the hunt for something more savoury. A cane com queijo Pastel. Wonderful meat and cheese pastry that is a favourite in Brazil. If you feel parched from all the salty goodness. you can wash it down with some sugar cane juice, or coconut water which you can also find at the market.
If eating and drinking aren't the only things you are interested in. Sao Paulo has great parks, museums, and attractions.
After an hour spent looking at new, and old art. I got hungry again. Can you blame me? The food in this city is too good.
Sao Paulo has a big Japanese influence. Because of this. Sushi is a staple in Sao Paulo. They have some of the best in the world. Sushi and $3 dollar beer. A perfect combination. Stella may be cheap here. But in Toronto a bottle like this at a sushi restaurant would set you back $7 or $8.
Another beautiful day with fantastic weather means a nice walk. a walk to the famous Municipal Market. A market where Anthony Bourdain came to and tried the traditional Mortadella Sandwich. Something I needed to try. A mammoth sized sandwich. Fit for a king. Or just a hungry man from Toronto. Don't judge me. I was very hungry.
But Brazil is a very diverse, culturally rich place. With food from every continent. They also have a large Italian population. Which is why we chose to have some pizza on our final night. The Margarita was a delight. Simple, fresh, and the ingredients shine through.
I could spend a month here and still be overwhelmed with the amount of great food, and places to go. but alas the trip has to end. But I won't be leaving Brazil just yet. Tomorrow we head to Florianopolis. Stay Tuned!
