The terms “fire protection engineer” and “fire safety engineer” are often used interchangeably both in Australia and internationally, but there are some subtle differences between the two roles.

The two professions can work side by side. For example, the fire safety engineer will present a fire engineering design that states that, in order to be compliant, a building must be protected by an automatic sprinkler system. It is then up to the fire protection engineer to design this system and how it will be installed, used and maintained.
