Sunday 20th October 1996 will be a day Newcastle United fans will never forget. It was the day where they taught reigning champions Manchester United a lesson in attacking football. Kevin Keegan’s side put in a stunning exhibition and beat the Red Devils 5-0 at St James’ Park.
The fifth goal was the crowning glory and it came from a defender in the form of Philippe Albert. 4-0 up already and collecting a pass from Rob Lee, Albert spotted Peter Schmeichel off his goal-line and produced the most exquisite of chips over the top of the Dane who could only look on and watch as the Belgian ran away in celebration.
Sky’s Andy Gray summed it up: “Well if the rest was the cake, there is the icing. A quite majestic goal from Philippe Albert!”
It was the perfect way to cap the perfect afternoon for everyone connected with Newcastle United.
