How much does it really cost to hire movers? In this video, you’ll learn how to save money when moving to a new home, and how you can avoid additional costs at the end of your local move.
The average cost of hiring professional movers for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $800–1,200, according to Voyo Popovic, CEO of Piece of Cake Moving & Storage. Elsewhere in the country, you may pay less. But between estimates, flat rates, and hidden fees, it can be difficult to know what the final price will actually be.
The most common question Piece of Cake’s clients ask when receiving their moving quote is: “Is this price all-inclusive?” Many moving companies offer a guaranteed estimate, which covers all aspects of the move except packing and tip. (Packing services, plus moving boxes and other packing supplies, may be available as add-on costs.) But you should double-check to be sure of what your estimate includes. Are you paying an hourly rate for a certain amount of time? Or is it a flat rate for a full-service move—including costs such as parking, moving items up or down stairs, heavy lifting, and any moving-truck and road-related charges? If you don’t see all of these items clarified on your moving estimate, you risk being charged additional fees on your moving day..
If you’re looking to reduce moving costs, plan your move date for the middle of the month or on a Sunday, when demand for moving companies is lower. You may also pay less if you book your move several weeks in advance.
