We all know that sleep is so vital for your overall health. But what happens with just a single night of sleep deprivation. Well, there's a study for that.
In 2018, the authors looked at the effect of a single night of sleep deprivation and the build-up of beta-amyloid. And remember, beta-amyloid is that protein that builds up in things like Alzheimer's disease. And so they were really looking at the clearance of beta-amyloid in 20 healthy adults.
And what they found was that even a single night of sleep deprivation caused a buildup in the hippocampal, parahippocampal, and thalamic regions.
Bottom line, the patients who underwent this one single night had lots of changes in their moods simply because of not sleeping; they were less alert, more tired, less friendly, less happy, less social, more confused, and less energetic. And, of course, more sleepy.
So, as always, make sure you're trying to prioritize sleep every night and aim for seven to 9 hours a night if you're an adult.
