More than two decades after the fall of communism, Hungarian prosecutors have charged a former party official with war crimes.
Bela Biszku, 92, was detained last year over his role in the suppression of the anti-Soviet uprising in 1956.
Biszku is facing charges due to a change in law that stipulates war crimes and crimes against humanity do not lapse.
The 1956 uprising was a nationwide revolt against the Soviet-backed government in Budapest.
Large number of civilians were killed or arrested
during its suppression.
Biszku is accused of ordering numerous shootings of protesters in the capital and in the northern Hungarian town of Salgotarjan where 46 men woman and children were shot dead.
Biszku who served as interior minister after the uprising denies the committing any crimes.
