After Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros in the Philippines erupted on June 3, 2024, posts showing lava exploding from a mountain top began to circulate with claims it showed the event.
The posts were widely shared and viewed hundreds of thousands of times – but they do not show the June 3 eruption of Mount Kanlaon. Using a reverse image search, Manila-based Jan Cuyco found the original footage used in the post.
It was lifted from a 2018 video posted by Germany-based photographer Martin Rietze on his YouTube channel. In the false posts, the footage was flipped and sped up.
