Our primary goal when treating a child with bunions is to eliminate pain and prevent them from getting bigger. Surgery should only be considered as a very last resort and in fact we rarely recommend bunion surgery for kids. Even if necessary bunion surgery on children should be avoided until the growth plates are mature.
A bunion in a child is known as a juvenile bunion. They are caused by an inherited foot structure and are not due to shoes. Orthotic devices can be used in many situations to help slow progression of the bunion deformities.
