Lanao is one of the most beautiful places in Mindanao. It is located in the South of the Philippines. We are called Meranaws. The word Lanao comes from the Meranaw word
“Ranaw” meaning Lake and Meranaw means lake dweller. Meranaws occupy the land
around Lake Lanao.
Lake Lanao divides Lanao del norte and del sur. Dansalan is Marawi’s old name and was explored by Spaniards in 1639. At that time, Marawi was a city of Malayan and
Arabic culture. The people of Lanao refused Christianity that is why most of the people in Mindanao are still Muslims.
Lanao is surrounded by bays (iliana, Pagadian, Iligan and Panguil) and in the middle
is a very large lake (Lake Ranaw). Lake Ranao is a large ancient lake and the second largest lake in the Philippines and largest lake in Mindanao. It is counted as one of the 15 ancient lakes in the world.
Lake Lanao is fed by 4 rivers. It’s only outlet is the Agus river and flows to 2 channels.
The first channel is the world famous Maria Cristina falls. The second is the Tinago falls.
Both falls are located in Iliga. And we also have the Cathedral and the Santa Cruz falls
in Kapatagan. The Mimbalut, Limunsudan and Dodiongan falls are also in Iligan.
Lanao also has dormant and extinct volcanoes such as Mount Baya, Mount Mupo. Hills such as the Angoyao and Signal to name a few. And offsetting the mountains is the presence of a flat coastal land we call Kapatagan.
Because of the rich soil and water,
Lanao is a major producer of bananas, rice, coconuts, corn and marine products like tuna, crabs and shrimps
