A swollen liver is not itself a disease. It's a symptom that tells you that your liver is fighting off trouble of some kind. Swelling and enlargement occurs because of some other underlying liver disease, disorder, or condition.
In the early stages of swelling, there are usually no signs. Symptoms like the following only begin to appear after a dangerous amount of damage to the liver has already taken place. These often occur in combination with each other.
* Pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen.
* The sudden appearance of what many people call a "pot belly," as fluid accumulates in the abdominal area, making the stomach protrude. This fluid buildup is called ascites.
* Jaundice, or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes. This is a classic warning sign of a variety of liver problems.
* Muscle aches.
* Nausea.
* Poor appetite, followed by unintentional weight loss.
* A feeling that your stomach is always full.
* Ongoing fatigue as liver function decreases.
The medical name for a swollen liver is hepatomegaly. It may also be called an enlarged liver.
