How to Change Wireless Adapter to 5GHz

In this tutorial, I’ll show you how you can change your wireless adapter to 5GHz. By default, Windows has it on 2.4GHz. While 5GHz might sound better, this isn’t always the case. They both have their usage, and depending on your setup you might want to keep the setting as it is.

5GHz is faster than 2.4GHz but keep in mind that you lose a bit of range to compensate for the speed increase. 2.4GHz can pass through walls more easily, making the connection more stable if there is a distance between your PC and modem.

Change Wireless Adapter from 2.4GHz to 5GHz

Click on the Windows search bar or search icon and type in Device Manager.
Once Device Manager opens, expand the Network adapters. Here, you want to search for the adapter with WiFi or wireless in the name. Right-click on the wireless adapter and select properties.

Go to the Advanced tab. In the property section you need to search for Preferred Band. Unfortunately, it happens that some wireless adapters do not have the option to set a preferred band. Click on the Value type and change it to prefer 5GHz band.

Click on Ok to continue. Your WiFi connection might disconnect for a few seconds and it is possible that you need to re-enter your password. If you want to make sure that you are connected with the 5GHz, reboot your PC but usually, this isn’t necessary.
