Summer is the season to spot grouse, like this female Dusky Grouse (also known as Blue Grouse). In summer, dusky grouse venture out looking for plant shoots, caterpillars, berries, and even mushrooms to supplement their diet. However once the season changes, these grouse retreat into dense woods where their mottled plumage hides them from predators. In the winter, dusky grouse survive by eating the needles of Douglas fir trees. Filmed July, 2007.
