The Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Treaty is a major step forward in contributing to the governance of the global commons, especially for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Singapore.
SIDS are affected by changes and impacts to the marine environment. The BBNJ Treaty creates rules that allow the responsible use of resources on the high sea and deep sea bed, ensuring the least possible disruption to the marine environment and life in these areas. Having these rules means that resources in these areas can be used fairly. This includes knowledge gained from scientific research.
