Central to any chromatography data system is the ability to accurately identify components in an HPLC or GC run. Chromperfect has powerful peak detection and integration algorithms. In this chapter, we review how more complex chromatograms are handled where search windows overlap and how the multi-peak and nested search windows can provide accurate, reproducible and automated chromatography results.
The example is a common question from customers in the petroleum industry and details the problem of the "hexanes" or "C6+" fraction.
A number of hexane and higher alkane isomers elute in a group. These are normally not resolved into individual components but are converted to an area sum, then an amount is calculated with a common response factor. If this was the end of the story, then this calculation could be performed with a multipeak window. But the same region also contains peaks due to aromatic components: These must not contribute to the C6+ fraction, instead, they must be reported individually, using their own response factors.
