Greeting! Here are videos from a 6 day stay in Ferndale, California over USC (where I teach) spring break in mid March 2022. I wanted to take a break from my typical work routine and also get in some running among the tall trees. This trip ended up being exactly what I was looking for! I flew in to ACV Monday afternoon (with a layover in San Francisco), and first stopped at "Toni's 24 hour restaurant" diner for a patty melt and an amazing bread pudding before continuing south. As it was too early to check in to my AirBnB, I drove to Centerville Beach and went grocery shopping. I then checked in at 4 pm. I stayed at this place: [ Ссылка ].
The next morning I woke up to a light rain which was absolutely wonderful. In Los Angeles where I live now, it hardly ever rains, and I really miss this. I ran from the house to Russ Park, where I encountered a neat pond. In the Czech and Slovak folklore, we have a belief that ponds like this are occupied by a green man called "vodník" who drowns his victims and keep their souls in tea cups. The pond definitely had that feel to it. The rest of the day was spent in the cabin working on various projects.
Wednesday was a full day with morning meetings so I didn't get a chance to go running until the afternoon. I went back to the beach. The Lost Coast is a spectacular place to run! I went down Fleener Creek trail and ran on the sand to Guthrie Creek. This trail is not visible at all from the beach but out of complete luck, I ran into another runner exactly at this point and she pointed out which way to go. I returned on the road with a quick detour to the Old Sub Base.
Thursday I also had work in the morning so didn't go running until the afternoon. Before that, I grabbed lunch at Ferndale Pizza Company, which was a short walk from the cabin. I also grabbed coffee and a scone at the wonderful "Mind's Eye Manufactory & Coffee Lounge". I then drove about 20 miles back towards Eureka to run in the Headwaters Forest Reserve at Elk River. I randomly found this place on Google Maps. Here I did a 6 miles out and back. I suffered in the beginning, as pizza and 2 beers is not a good way to start your run.
Friday I finally made it to the Avenue of the Giants. This was my second time there as Sandra and I ran in the 2016 Avenue of the Giants marathon, [ Ссылка ]. I first visited the Rockefeller area, which is where the race does the first 13 mile out and back. I parked at Blue Slide Day area and did a spectacular 5 mile loop. I got to see plenty of giant redwoods and even crossed on one across a creek. I also visited the deserted Albee Creek campground. I then drove to the main avenue and did another quick loop by the Founders Grove. I then returned back to Ferndale. First I managed to make it back to the coffee shop before they closed for another pastry, this time a peach muffin. I then grabbed a drink at the rowdy Palace pub, and then had a fancy dinner the VI Restaurant in the Victorian Inn, before ending the night with watching the opening night of The Man from La Mancha at the Ferndale Repertory Theater.
The next morning I woke up to rain which was wonderful (the opening video was filmed this last day despite me wearing the same shirt as when I arrived). I took the 2pm flight to SFO and then to Burbank. It seems I brought the rain with me as we actually got an unexpected shower in LA that evening. I will be back, and if you get a chance, please visit this area. The Humboldt County is spectacular.
