In this video, Dr. David Friedmann, a neurotologist at NYU Langone Health, shares his thoughts on hearing preservation. His interest in hearing preservation stems from research from over the past decade which shows that patients who are able to successfully use a combination of a cochlear implant with their acoustic hearing can have better hearing outcomes, whether it needs to be amplified or not.
Dr. Friedmann also reflects on his experience and the benefits of using the Slim Modiolar electrode in patients with residual acoustic hearing after surgery that could benefit from amplification. When he and his partners conducted a study with the Contour Advance® and other perimodiolar electrodes, they found that preserving acoustic hearing at the time of surgery can be possible.
