This month we are going to be following JJ again, a beautiful 13-year-old QH that is here for some re-training and rehabilitation. This will be his second month of rehabilitation and retraining. In this video we are continuing his online lunge and free lunge rehabilitation.

Like most horses he was run relentlessly and chased with the whip while being lunged so he has tremendous fear and trepidation. This prevents him from connecting, being present (he’s always in past memory/trigger) and thinking/self-regulating. My rehabilitation process will help him do all three: connect to me, stay present and self-regulate. We must have these to be safe while riding.

JJ’s trauma is like most horses I have worked with. He has learned how to behave a certain way to avoid punishment. His has learned certain behaviors such as freezing, going on auto-pilot and not thinking, fear of bonding and assuming.

He freezes because he is unsure and scared to do the wrong thing. He goes on autopilot because he was never truly loved until now, trained mechanically and never allowed to express himself or offer his opinion.

He does not know how to open his heart, be vulnerable, trust and deeply bond. This shows up in his inability to take treats, relax completely, groom and be affectionate with humans. He also assumes what you want, does things before you ask, because he is smart and trying to avoid punishment.

Horses like this learn learned helplessness: a condition in which a person (being) suffers from a sense of powerlessness, arising from a traumatic event or persistent failure to succeed. It is thought to be one of the underlying causes of depression.

JJ began his life out west and as a ranch horse. Around the age of 9 he was sold to be a lesson horse. This is typical and unfortunate for so many of the ranch horses. Once they are used up, burnt out and destroyed, all before the young age of 10, they are sold off to some unexpecting person who thinks they are getting a well-trained, confident, and versatile horse.

This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Most unsuspecting owners end up in the ER shortly after purchasing a horse like JJ. His owner was thrown several times because of his triggers.
