In this episode we explore a paper by Fengxia Xin et al., Electrochemical Characterization and Microstructure Evolution of Ni-Rich Layered Cathode Materials by Niobium Coating/Substitution from a recent Chemistry of Materials journal.
In this paper we discuss how adding small amounts of Niobium to NMC, giving large increases in capacity and lifetime of commonly used Li-ion batteries. This works as Niobium is able to coat the particles giving lower interfacial resistance, increased mechanical resistance, and higher stability with electrolytes. Increases in capacity and lifetime directly help the electrification of the world and this could be a big step to help!
