In this video, we separate out embryos of a 'Turpentine' seed that recently sprouted. Our goal is to work with these polyembryonic seeds to remove the sexual embryo and retain the clonal ones, creating uniform rootstock for our cultivars. This is known as 'roguing out' the sexual embryo, and although not a foolproof method, it is generally effective in maintaining similar, if not identical, rootstocks.
Just as humans are borne out of sexual embryos (between the mom and dad), plants perform the same (called monoembryony), although some cultivars are prone to producing additional embryos that are clones of the female parent from which they arose (called polyembryony). Some seeds are more prone to polyembrony, making them suitable rootstocks. By using these cultivars, we multiply our amount of rootstocks for every seed planted, allowing for more trees.
Please note, we are not as selective as a tree nursery because our goal is not to sell trees. All these trees go into our own orchard, allowing us to have more wiggle room in the sprouted embryos we maintain.
