I have to admit, even as a horror enthusiast, this movie slip below of my radar wide.
But over time, I couldn't help but notice that there is a certain "buzz" around this movie,
supposedly "standing out" recent horror.
So I gave it a try...
...and waited for it, then waited some more...
ok, tension is building up somewhat with the music, but nothing is going on...
...and then this scene happened.
Pretty effective and shocking, I have to admit. The accident itself wasn't really shown, thus no gore even - then very effective period of suspense waiting till the morning - when the main character's mom would eventually found the headless body in her car. I love how that was the focus of the scene, followed by the gruesome scene of the head still laying in the road where it was torn off whilst the flies are having feast on it.
Unimaginable situation. Both actors - Alex Wolff and Toni Collette did a great job. They made it feel "real". The way Alex portraying Peter just waiting for the mom (Toni Collette) to find out in the morning what he had done (although a clear accident), not knowing how he could tell her... How could you? The guilt that he felt after rendering him numb was actually my favorite part, more so then the actual accident scene.
Ok, I get it, I "enjoyed" (for lack of a better word) that scene very much. But I would hardly call it horror in the first place. It was more shocking, very sad and depressing - than "scary".
But even though after this scene the movie turned up the horror aspects bit more, before turning downright weird, I kept wondering - is that it? Is this what all the buzz is about?
I bet is only because of this one scene alone, as effective as it is - credit given where credit is due - and I liked the "weird" ending as well just because it is different, and certainly not what I expected, but still, I kinda feel about this movie like it is a "one trick pony". It does it well, but it is about one scene alone after all.
Which be all means is not a bad thing in itself. To have a decent build up - building context to the "finale", is actually how it is "supposed" to be done.
Except, in this case, the finale kind of happened mid movie - and then it goes "down" from there.
The actual finale feels kinda underwhelming in comparison - although, I do appreciate the unexpected "weird" ending and can still recommend to go watch the movie.
What did you guys think about this movie? Is it all "that"? Or it is just a one trick pony? No matter how well executed.
