This picture was taken 6 years ago on the day of my graduation.
It’s the day I went from being a medical student to a junior doctor. That day is filled with anticipation, hope and achievement. All the hours of studying and hard work have led to this moment and you’re on top of the world.
Then reality hits. You’re walking through the gates of hell. 80-90 hour weeks. Less pay than an Aldi worker. Inability to meet your family or friends and no control over where and when you work. What you thought could be your salvation quite quickly becomes your undoing. When we wonder why NHS doctors are leaving the profession in their masses and other NHS staff are following, that is why. But all hope is not lost.
Today marks the first day of the Junior Doctor strikes and the potential to make a difference to the way things are. Better pay means better staff retention and working conditions. It means a system less stretched to the brink and the hope that the NHS can continue serving what it was made to when it was founded almost 75 years ago: the British people. I support those striking today and hope this can be the turning point in this story. Do you support our junior doctors?
