In this video I make a mid-century modern plant stand. This simple woodworking project using traditional joinery would make a great gift, especially for Mother's day (which is coming up soon!). Or you can make it for yourself to add to your home decor. The design uses a half-lap joint and notches cut out of the cross piece and uprights. I made these plant stands out of solid cherry, but any wood should work.

I milled the wood to 3/4 thick and all of the pieces are 2 inches wide.

I used a dado blade on my table saw to cut out the half lap and notches. You could use a regular blade and take more passes, or use a router. You could even use a chisel, if hands tools are your kind of thing!

You can change the dimensions for any size of pot and change the height to fit your situation. The stands I show in this video are 12 inches tall, with the cross piece at 7 inches high. The cross piece is designed to fit an 8 inch pot.

In the video I finished the plant stand with Watco teak oil. The other plant stand shown was finished with water based clear satin polyurethane. I wanted to show how the two finishes contrast each other and to show you can use a multitude of finishing techniques
