In this video I experiment with how well a Jackery 500 will run an old 120v mini fridge for a short camping trip. I gained some real-world experience in using a solar panel and the Jackery 500, and hopefully I can use this knowledge to better prepare myself in the future for potential longer-term trips.
A number of options are available, some of which are;
1-Get a more energy efficient 12v fridge. This would allow me to use my other Jackey's also which would give me the option to cycle through them instead of fully relying on the Jackery 500
2-Get a second Jackery 500, so I can cycle between the two and better utilize two different solar panels rather than having one sit idle.
3-Get a second solar panel and parallel them so the Jackery can double its rate of charge.
4-Plan to run a small generator a few hours of the day to both help top off the Jackery, and also to remove the fridge load from the Jackery for a short period of time, which would result is much faster charging times.
5-Use my car battery to suppliment recharging the Jackery in the evening. This option however has the added risk of running the car battery too low to start which is a not a position you want to find yourself in when camping.
Ultimately it would've been very cool if Jackery had the USB-PD charging option for the Jackery 500 like they have on the Jackery 300. This would allow me to recharge from two sources, and would've been really neat.
