Lebanon sits on the verge of disaster. A serious financial crisis that began in 2019 has been compounded by other major issues, including the Covid pandemic and a massive explosion at the Beirut Port that is estimated to have cost US$8-15 billion. In the meantime, the country's weak and fractured government and endemic corruption means that there has been no political solution to the country's deepening problems. This has led both the UN and the World Bank to issuing warning about the dire implications of the situation. As things stand, Lebanon appears to be at risk of becoming a failed state. Aside from the human costs of such a collapse, this would raise the risk of a return to civil war and perhaps even war with neighbouring Israel.

Lebanon has a fascinating and troubled history. Having declared independence from France in 1943, the country's different religious communities reached an agreement to preserve the balance of power. However, in the years that followed, this came under increasing strain, not least of all due to the massive influx of Palestinian refugees in the late-1940 and 1960s, which changed the balance. As a result, the country descended into a bitter and complex cicil war in 1975, which eventually saw Syria and Israel intervene. Although this came to an end in 1989 under the Taif Agreement, which envisaged a Syrian and Israeli withdrawal and the disbanding of the country's militias, the country faced a huge bill for reconstruction. In 2019, the country, increasingly unable to repay these loans, fell into a serious financial crisis. This has left the country on the verge of compete collapse. However, the growing power of Hezbollah, a widely designated terrorist organisation backed by Iran and Syria, makes such a collapse all the more worrying for many observers.
