Cardiologists from Seattle Children's Heart Center and researchers from Seattle Children's Research Institute's Imagination Lab use 3D printing to help patients with complex heart conditions. First, a 2D radiographic image is turned into a 3D image and is sent to a 3D printer. The 3D printer turns the image data into a model made of plaster. Softening agents are used to make it more realistic. Then, doctors use the 3D model to practice surgical techniques and prepare for surgery. This often results in reduced risk for patients and less time spent in the operating room.
