How much better is HEVI Shot HEVI Hammer waterfowl hunting ammo than HEVI Steel? I do a ballistics gel and pattern test with both duck hunting loads to find out which shell performs best. Both had very good pattern density, but the big surprise came in the ballistics gel penetration. The specifications on both loads in this review are identical except that the Hammer has 15% bismuth and 85% steel and costs around 40% more.

The shells used were:
HEVI-Shot's HEVI Hammer #4 shot, 3", 1.25oz (233 pellets), 1500 FPS
HEVI-Shot's HEVI Steel #4 shot, 3", 1.25oz (239 pellets), 1500 FPS
I did this field test at a certified shooting range with eye protection and Tetra ear protection. I used a Mossberg 940 Pro Waterfowl shotgun with a 28" barrel and a Carlson's Sporting Clays Extra Full Choke. Special thanks to Carlson's for providing the choke.
