My name is Barbara Esses and I do events for a living. I'm Ruthie Hecht; I'm an event planner and I work with and for my mother. We're going to teach you the do's and don'ts for the perfect wedding. Jewish weddings are very involved.First of all check with your rabbi to see what elements he needs.Do you have to sign the marriage contract? Does he have specific rules for the ceremony? How religious do you have to be?
In planning a Jewish wedding, typically you'll do cocktails first.Get all of that Jewish ceremonial stuff out of the way during cocktails. Then march down the aisle, have a beautiful ceremony and go into the party room. If you're going to have a horah I love the bride and groom doing their first dance, everybody standing around them and immediately going into it.
When having a Jewish wedding definitely be aware of dietary needs. If you think that most of your guests are kosher don't serve lobster as the main course.
There's also a great Jewish tradition called the mezinka, when your parents are marrying off their last child.Everybody gathers around and dances for them. That is obviously the biggest Jewish accomplishment for a Jewish mother and she's very proud - enjoy it and celebrate the evening. One of the most famous Jewish wedding traditions is the groom breaking a glass at the end of the ceremony.Definitely be sure you take a light bulb, wrap it in a napkin and let him step down on it with his heel.Putting a real drinking glass there, he won't be able to break it and your guests will be watching him fumble for five minutes.
There are so many aspects to a Jewish wedding, but those are some of the basics.
