On April 16, 2017, The Reading the Pictures salon, “Key Pictures from Trump’s First 100 Days” brought together a panel with deep historical, research and photojournalism expertise to analyze the photographic “first impressions” of this aggressive and defiant presidency. How did the Trump administration look at this early stage? How was it managing photo ops? How was the visual media picturing Trump? And how was the administration using its own pictures to promote itself? Panelists included: Michelle Bogre (moderator), Associate Professor of Photography at Parsons School of Design. Nina Berman, Documentary photographer, Associate Professor of Journalism at Columbia University; Cara Finnegan, Writer, photography historian, Professor of Communication, University of Illinois; John Edwin Mason, Professor of African History and the History of Photography at University of Virginia; Mark Murrmann, Photo Editor, Mother Jones; Rick Perlstein, Historian and Journalist; Michael Shaw, Publisher, Reading the Pictures.
The Reading the Pictures Salon is an on-line, real-time discussion between photojournalists, visual academics and other visual or subject experts. Each salon examines a set of images relevant to the major stories of the day.
