China ushered in extremely cold weather, the temperature fell below minus 50 degrees Celsius, setting a new record for the lowest temperature in China history.
Mohe City, known as China's Arctic town, was most affected by the super-strong polar air. It is located in the province of Heilongjiang which is also one of the closest regions to the Russian border.
On Sunday, January 22, the lowest temperature was measured at minus 53 degrees Celsius. Videos taken by people in Mohe show that the windows are frozen even there is floor heating in the house. Local people say that when tears are shed, they will freeze instantly.
Another footage shows that the A4 paper freezes in few seconds and is hard enough to cut bananas. Some people say that the mobile phone freezes in the pocket after being outdoors for half an hour.
Affected by the strong cold air, snowfall also occurred in many places in Shandong Province. Tourists and locals are advised to stay warm and safe because the low visibility may cause traffic accidents.
