The increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as well as other inflammatory joint disorders, has been recognized for many years. Although the precise mechanisms behind this link are still being investigated, researchers point to inflammatory processes in RA that also appear to damage regions of the cardiovascular system, causing multiple metabolic disturbances.
Mortality attributed to CVD doubles in patients with RA compared with the general population, and the risk for myocardial infarction has been shown to increase 60% 1-4 years after an RA diagnosis.
With such serious implications at stake, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus rheumatology experts discuss the urgent need to screen RA patients for CVD, the most current risk assessment and prevention measures, and CVD management strategies for all patients with RA.
