On September 21, 1956, a Grumman F-11 Tiger aircraft was testing weapons over the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island, New York. The pilot's task was to reach 20,000 feet, then dive at Mach 1 and fire two bursts. However, when he fired the second burst, something shattered his jet's windscreen. The pilot thought it was a bird strike and quickly returned to the base. He later found that the bullets from the burst he fired actually hit his own aircraft.
