Is a misdemeanor a conviction that will give you a criminal record? Unfortunately yes, as the former DA explains in this video.
Although a misdemeanor is a less serious crime than a felony, it is still considered a crime. That means a conviction will give you a criminal record. The conviction must be disclosed on job applications (unless it has been expunged) and on applications for state licenses (such as a nursing and contractors license). Moreover, a misdemeanor conviction will generally show up on a criminal background check.
Therefore, to the extent you are charged with a criminal offense, even a misdemeanor, it would behoove you to fight the case and try to avoid conviction.
In this video, a former Los Angeles County deputy district attorney -- now a California criminal defense lawyer -- explains the law.
