"Marichyasana" derives its name from the revered sage Marichi in Hindu mythology. This yoga pose is attributed to Sage Marichi, one of the seven great sages (sapta rishis), who was born from the mind of Brahma, the Creator of the Universe, and is also known as the 'Ray of Light' in this context. Although Marichyasana has ancient roots, its documentation can be traced back to a relatively recent period, appearing in Krishnamacharya's 'Yog Makaranda'.
In the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series, Marichyasana stands as a collection of seated poses. It presents itself in four distinct variations, each celebrated for its unique twisting elements, which contribute to its benefits for the body and mind.
The Sanskrit name for this particular variation is "मरीच्यासना C" (Marichyasana C).
To execute this pose:
1. Begin by assuming the same seated posture as in Marichyasana A. Instead of a forward bend, gently inhale as you raise your left arm upward.
2. Initiate a controlled twist of your torso to the right, allowing your left arm to hook over and across the bent right knee.
3. If your body allows, clasp your hands behind your back, interlocking your fingers. In this position, your left hand will be holding your right wrist, and your right palm will rest on your left thigh.
4. As you settle into the pose, maintain a deep breath, focusing on the twist along your spine and the opening of your chest.
5. Upon completion of the hold, exhale while gradually releasing the clasp of your hands, gently untwisting your torso, and returning to the initial seated position.
6. To balance the stretch, transition to the opposite side, repeating the same steps but with your right arm and left knee.
