The worst street in Victorian London shares a dark history with Jack the Ripper. In this documentary we find out how the East End district of Spitalfields gained a reputation for poverty in the 19th Century, but the addition of vice and crime added a particular disgrace to the character of this thoroughfare. The Street and its connecting courts and rows was, very much a slum – a dangerous slum. Even Jack London - the American journalist and social activist who journeyed through the East End in disguise - named it 'the worst street in London.'
