Inpatient rehab facilities focus on highly individualized treatment and rehabilitation to assist people suffering from severe injuries or illnesses in restoring their abilities and returning to their level of function prior to their admission. Patients live at the facility and get intensive daily therapy to help them in healing their bodies. Caregivers at these facilities encourage their patients to attend the required threshold of rehabilitation sessions of at least three hours a day, five days a week.
The goal of inpatient rehab facilities is to assist patients to regain physical independence, get them back home, and avoid readmissions. These goals are considered during the design of therapies and treatments by health care providers. Patients in these centers usually receive care from a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, and therapists.
Injured individuals who are sick with a neurological disorder, brain injury, fractures to the pelvis or lower extremity might require specialized treatment therefore they may benefit from IRFs. IRF services enable patients to return to their capabilities following severe injuries or illnesses. Some people, on the other hand, will require more intensive assistance than an IRF can give.
Remember, IRFs can come as a standalone building or be located within a short-term acute care hospital. IRFs require rehabilitation sessions of at least 3 hours per day, five days a week.
