After decades of military rule, Myanmar has taken a major step towards democracy.
The country′s election commission announced Friday that the opposition National League for Democracy party, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won more than 80 percent of contested seats in parliament.
This means the NLD will get to choose the country′s next president.
It will not be Suu Kyi, because the constitution bans anyone with a foreign family member from becoming president.
Her late husband and sons are British.
President Thein Sein and the head of the military have congratulated Suu Kyi′s party and promised to work smoothly with the new government.
They′re expected meet with the NLD next week to begin the power transition.
