On May 5, 1961, U.S. Navy commander Alan B. Shepard Jr. was the first American ever to fly in space, piloting the Mercury capsule Freedom 7 into the pages of history. The Mercury-Redstone 3 boosted Shepard into space aboard his Freedom 7 capsule to complete a 15-minute suborbital flight. The film follows Shepard from the announcement of the first seven Mercury astronauts through the recovery operations after a successful mission and includes footage of Shepard during the flight.
