The theme of this episode is collaboration - the importance of taking our genealogy research "out of the basement" and being willing to share it with others. We talked about two of Mags' projects and how we can all use them to further our research.
The first was mitoYDNA ([ Ссылка ] ), an independent database of over 11,000 YDNA and mitochondrial DNA samples. They accept kits from current testing companies as well as companies that are now defunct, so the data you have from years ago that you thought would never see the light of day again has a place to live once more! If you're a YDNA geek, be sure to check out their great tools and stats.
The second was WikiTree ([ Ссылка ] ), a collaborative tree where one person has one profile and there are no duplicates. It also has some great DNA features, where you can see descendants who have tested for an ancestor. Instead of seeing a list of matches and needing to figure out how they connect, you can go directly to testers' profiles and see if they're a match to you!

I loved chatting with Mags and hope that you will also embrace her spirit of collaboration. Being open to others' opinions and working together in this genealogical community is key!

Mags Gaulden is a genetic genealogist based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She has dedicated decades to researching family histories and exploring the role of genetics in genealogy. Born and raised in the United States, Mags developed an early interest in family history and genealogy. She started researching her own family tree, which led her to discover the power of genetic testing in genealogy.
Mags is the founder of Grandma’s Genes, a genealogy consultation firm in Ottawa, and mitoYDNA.org, a free and accessible Y and mitochondrial DNA database for the genealogy community.
Mags is also a leader at WikiTree, a collaborative, collaborative, global family tree, collaborative genealogy website. She co-leads the DNA Integrators Team to further the DNA features of WikiTree.
