Dettifoss is often named the most powerfull waterfall in Europe, due to its volume of an average 193 meters per second, and a drop of 44 metres (144 ft), 100 metres wide.
The waterfall is situated on the mighty Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river, which originates from the northern edge of the largest glacier in Europe, Vatnajökull. It has inspired many poems and the neo-classical composition "Dettifoss" (Op. 57) by Jón Leifs. It has been featured in films such as Ridley Scott's "Prometheus".
Dettifoss is served on its west side by Route 862, a tarmac road built in 2011. An older gravel road (Route 864) serves the east side.
