In his new book, “Nigeria and the Nation-State: Rethinking Diplomacy with the Postcolonial World,” Amb. (ret.) John Campbell characterizes the Nigerian state as “an archipelago of authority surrounded by seas of ungoverned spaces.” This conception of Nigeria as a fragile state, oriented more toward elite interests rather than citizen services, is at the heart of Nigeria’s persistent insecurity, Campbell contends.
This roundtable reviews Nigeria’s challenges to creating an effective state and the implications this has for insecurity, and examines ways forward for Nigerian citizens demanding a government more responsive to the public good—and means by which international partners can better advance both governance and security.
