October 25, 2016 - the next to last flight! A few days later scheduled 747 service to SXM ended forever. KLM flight 785 (747-400 from Amsterdam) arrives at Princess Juliana Airport Sint Maarten (SXM/TNCM). As the big bird contacts the tower, we spot her against the blue sky about 10 miles out over Anguilla. The landing gear comes down as she turns inbound to final approach before passing low over the beach. After landing she back-taxi's down the runway and to the terminal under the hot Caribbean sun.

The aircraft, registration PH-BFH "City of Hongkong" is a 747-406M combi, carrying passengers in the front half of the main deck and freight in the back. For decades, KLM and other airlines flew 747's into Sint Maarten and you could experience the thrill of having them roar low over your head while standing on Maho Beach, just off the end of the runway. Sadly for those who love the "Queen of the Skies" that era has passed and now we have to amuse ourselves with smaller jets.
