Five years after a career-threatening injury, Steve Jones beat the odds just to get to Oakland Hills. Jones had to go through sectional qualifying to earn his place in the championship, and an opening-round 74 placed him off the radar of contenders. A second-round 66 pulled him within two strokes of leader Payne Stewart. Jones trailed 54-hole leader Tom Lehman by three strokes midway through the final round, but rallied to win, becoming the first player since Jerry Pate 20 years prior to win the U.S. Open as a sectional qualifier.
