Tightness and pain after surgery in the breast, shoulder, or chest wall are the most common side effects I treat in the clinic after breast cancer surgery.
Early after surgery, Gentle stretching can make a massive difference in the speed of recovery and reduction of pain. Stretching can help bring back the motion of the shoulder and the ability to reach for getting dressed, bathing, getting ready for the day, caring for children, and getting back into sports or hobbies.
These are some of my favorite post-op exercises for after drains are removed. I love adding a deep breath in each stretch to get the ribs to mobilize and hit those deeper muscles!
Stretches can be taught by a PT specific to what someone needs and can be scaled or modified for safety.
