PAUT inspections are based on the same physical principles as conventional UT. The difference between the two solutions lies in the configuration of the probes, the electronics and performance of the instruments.

This inspection method uses probes composed of several small elements, which are individually pulsed in an electronically calculated sequence ("Phasing"). This technique is complementary to other methods such as Eddy Current and Radiography.

PAUT inspections can be used to inspect a wide range of configurations and material. This method is often used for welding inspection and crack detection.
