Hundreds of Greek- and Turkish-Cypriots clashed on Sunday (11/8) in the UN-patrolled buffer zone between the north and south of the divided island. One Greek-Cypriot demonstrator was killed and dozens of people were hurt in some of the worst intercommunal violence on the divided island since 1974. The incident happened as hundreds of motorcyclists and stone-throwing Greek Cypriots clashed with Turkish troops and
civilians in protests against the division of the Mediterranean
island which Turkey invaded 22 years ago.
