A Shot in the Dark (1964) [PG]
Hilarity ensures when the incompetent Insp. Clouseau is hired to investigate the baffling case of a chauffeur murder; all the evidence point to maid Maria Gambrelli, but Clouseau thinks otherwise...
Being the second outing of The Pink Panther series, A SHOT IN THE DARK introduces the hilariously insane Charles Dreyfus and Clouseau's kung fu servant Cato (spelled "Kato" in this film). It is also one of the two films in the series to not have the animated feline featured in the opening sequence, if you count Inspector Clouseau (1968) as a Pink Panther film.
Helmed by Blake Edwards once again, A Shot in the Dark has since been considered the best Pink Panther film. Sellers would later return as Clouseau over a decade later in The Return of the Pink Panther (1975). Edwards and Sellers would make two more Pink Panther films together until Sellers' death in 1980: The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) and Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978). In 1982, there was Trail of the Pink Panther, which reused outtakes and footage from previous Pink Panther films for Clouseau's scenes. David Niven returned as "The Phantom" (Sir Charles Lytton), though he declined playing The Phantom again in The Return of the Pink Panther, who was played by Christopher Plummer instead. After Trail, there was Curse of the Pink Panther (1983) and Son of the Pink Panther (1993), the only Pink Panther films Edwards made without Sellers. Inspector Clouseau (1968) didn't involve neither Edwards, Sellers, nor composer Henry Mancini; meanwhile, they made The Party (1968).
