Blood pressure is the force of your blood against your artery walls.
High blood pressure is a silent sneak, often causing no symptoms but
making your heart work harder.
Unchecked, high blood pressure can damage your eyes, kidneys and
brain. It’s also a significant risk factor for heart disease and can even lead to
vascular dementia.
A blood pressure cuff on your arm reveals your levels. In mm Hg,
blood pressure has two numbers. “Normal” is below 120/80 mm Hg. “Elevated” is
120-129 over less than 80. “Hypertension stages 1 and 2” are 130/80 to
140/90 mm Hg or higher.
To lower your blood pressure, quit smoking, embrace the DASH diet,
get active, limit alcohol and cut the salt.
Adults over 40 or with risk factors should check their blood
pressure yearly. Know your numbers to protect your heart.
