The North Atlantic is a central part of NATO’s area of responsibility. It is in fact the main transatlantic link that enables US reinforcements to Europe in the event of a major crises. Norway has the world’s 4th largest merchant fleet and is home to critical infrastructure along the whole coastline, including oil and gas installations, pipelines, fisheries, sub-sea interconnector cables and strategic ports. How do we protect these interests and what challenges do they pose to allied security? What are the driving forces of the maritime domain in the years to come?
