Why do horses need their hooves trimmed regularly, while wild horses don't seem to need any trimming? Well, hooves just keep on growing like our fingernails, but wild horses constantly travel several miles a day in search of food and water over rough terrain, which naturally wears down their hooves and keeps them at a healthy length. However, domestic horses don’t travel as much and walk on softer surfaces like grass, which is why they need trimming about every few weeks. Without regular trimming, their hooves can grow too long, and poor hoof care over time can weaken or even cause the hoof to detach.
