This is a radioactive military compass from (at least) the Korean war era. The dial inside of the compass was painted with a highly radioactive paint made from radium, the same substance that poisoned the radium girls. While this compass has long lost its glow, the radioactive paint still remains, nearing 50 microsieverts per hour on a device primarily sensitive to beta and gamma radiation. Radium-226 is primarily an alpha emitter. This means that the levels seen here are likely a fraction of what it's actually kicking out. I may invest in a better container, now that I know = )
